Throwback: Kurdistan

Panasonic Lumix

Throwback is a series from when I was travelling to the far corners of the world. All of the photographs are made with a compact camera, borrowed gear or later on with a cellphone. I was travelling light and learned that the best camera in the world is the one you’ve got on you.

In the middle of the Zagros mountains, not too far from the Iraqi border and deep in the Iranian part of Kurdistan, lies Palangan. It doesn’t take long to fall in love with this traditional Kurdish village and it’s inhabitants. Build on steep slopes and split in half by the Sirwan river, it makes for a spectacular setting. We arrived in Palangan without a plan and not knowing where to eat or sleep. The locals however made sure we could stay in one of the vacant houses while neighbours provided us with pillows and blankets. Every morning we got up, walked through the village and found ourselves hanging out with these lovely people. In a country full of hospitality, Palangan takes it even a step further.
